JAMB Approved Cut-Off Marks For Universities And Polytechnics 2023

By academic law, Joint Admission Matriculation Board is an authorized body saddled with responsibilities of deciding cut-off marks for the universities, polytechnics, monotechnics, and colleges of education, but due to mass failure during the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination which has been attributed to the following factors: coronavirus pandemic, shifting of UTME writing date, NIN integration hiccups among other factors, this makes the body not follow its usual method in 2022/2023 academic session that’s why it held meeting with representatives of Nigerian institutions to chart the course forward on how they will go about it where they all agreed unanimously that each institution should decide its cut-off mark.

JAMB has been a deciding factor for all tertiary institutions but JAMB delegated its legislation to all these tertiary institutions in 2023 UTME; JAMB has given the cutoff mandate to institutions that each institution should set its cut-off marks according to its standard. Before this year UTME, the Examination Body usually sets 180 for universities, 150 for polytechnics and monotechnics, and 100 for colleges of education, later it reduced federal and state universities’ cut-off marks to 160, private universities 140, polytechnics 120, and colleges 100. So every institution now has a say in deciding its minimum benchmark for cut-off marks.

I know many candidates who did not score enough marks would like to know what will be the cut-off marks for their most preferred or more preferred institutions since this year’s cut-off mark is to be decided by them. Many candidates who scored below cut-off may not be able to gain admission if they couldn’t score the set cut-off mark for their schools of choice but there’s an opportunity for them to apply for a change of institution on the JAMB portal for the institutions that will admit them with the scores they got when they sat for UTME.

In this article, you will learn about the cutoff mark your school of choice has set so that you can start preparing for screening exercise if you got the cutoff scores or above but if you didn’t meet up with the cutoff mark. You can decide to effect a change of institution on the Jamb portal with the available school your score can access.

Below are the universities and polytechnics that have set their cut-off mark; you will know about their cut-off marks and will be given to you in a mixing university and polytechnic structure. Among the schools are federal universities, state universities, private universities, federal polytechnics, state polytechnics, and other degree and ND awarding institutions.

To Elucidate More

Many of these institutions stated above are somehow strict in giving admission to the students even if the candidates choose them as the most preferred such candidates score exact cut-off they set as their minimum. They may not give the prospective admission seekers admission or sometimes they will consider the candidates but by giving the candidates other courses different from the desired courses, such candidates prefer to study. So if the candidates want to be on the safe side, it’d be better for the prospective admission seekers to score above the minimum cutoff benchmark.

The candidates who score higher than the cutoff marks set will have the advantage to gain admission. Although there are many factors institutions usually consider to give admission in this part of the world, apart from minimum cut-off mark (which should be on merit); there are also factors such as quota system, catchment area, federal character (although not so common among Nigerian institutions but some higher institutions consider it). All these factors play host as an admission deciding factor for Nigerian institutions so any student who knows this will be safe from admission hammer.

In conclusion, candidates should note that all these are just minimum cut-off marks set by the above schools, scoring above it will give prospective admission seekers the upper hand in considering for admission more than those that scored these exact minimum cutoff marks.
